Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene (β-caryophyllene) is a bicyclic sesquiterpene and one of 2 isomers (the other being humulene). Its larger molecular structure makes it more stable than monoterpenes. Due to the stability and high flower yields, caryophyllene remains the most prevalent terpene in cannabis year-to-year. Caryophyllene is commonly recognized for its pungent, peppery bite.

Another unique feature of caryophyllene is that it interacts with the CB2 receptor in the endocannabinoid system. This is the reason why caryophyllene is widely regarded for its anti-inflammatory effects.

Caryophyllene may help mitigate the psychoactive effects of THC. Current research is examining the role of CBD and caryophyllene in treating substance abuse disorders.
